Joshua Oppenheimer, an American film director based in Denmark, will lead a master class on documentary directing at the 18th International Documentary Film Festival of Iran, known as Cinema Verite, in Tehran.

Born in 1974, Oppenheimer is known for impactful documentaries like “The Act of Killing” (2012) and “The Look of Silence” (2014). Both films received critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, including Academy Awards. He has received significant honors, including the Marshall Scholarship in 1997 and the MacArthur Fellowship in 2014.

Oppenheimer studied filmmaking at Harvard University, where he graduated with highest honors. He later earned a PhD from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, funded by the Marshall Scholarship. He teaches film at the University of Westminster, sharing his experience with new filmmakers.

His filmmaking began with the short film “The Entire History of the Louisiana Purchase” (1997), which won the Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival. His work in Indonesia from 2004 to 2012 led to global recognition. “The Act of Killing” premiered at the 2012 Telluride Film Festival. The film focuses on the Indonesian mass killings of 1965-66 and won numerous awards worldwide, including the European Film Award for Best Documentary and a BAFTA.

They⁢ can provide a platform for marginalized voices and bring⁣ attention to narratives that might otherwise be overlooked. In addressing contemporary issues like ⁢the situation in Gaza, we must approach these stories with sensitivity and a commitment to⁣ truth, aiming⁢ to educate and​ provoke meaningful discourse.

ND3: ‍You’ve had a distinguished academic career alongside⁢ your filmmaking. ⁣How has ⁣your teaching at the University of Westminster influenced your approach to your own work?

Following this success, “The Look of Silence” premiered in 2014. This film examines the consequences of the past atrocities and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 88th Academy Awards. It also won several awards at the Venice International Film Festival.

The Documentary & Experimental Film Center (DEFC) organizes the Cinema Verite festival. This year’s festival includes sections for national and international competition, the Martyr Avini Award, a focus on Gaza, and various commemorative events.

Oppenheimer’s participation adds significant value to the festival, emphasizing the importance of documentaries in understanding reality.
