Explosions Rock Cúcuta: Olympic gymnast Injured, Power Outages Reported
Cúcuta experienced a series of violent incidents on Saturday night and Sunday morning, including an explosion that injured Olympic gymnast Jossimar calvo and his wife. The couple was traveling by car near the Eastern Road Ring when a detonation impacted their vehicle, resulting in its complete destruction. Both are receiving medical care and are reportedly out of danger, according to the Norte de santander Gymnastics League.
Power Disruptions and infrastructure Damage
The explosion also caused damage to Cens energy towers,leading to temporary power outages in several sectors,including Prados del Este,Escobal,García Herreros,El Salado,and the town of San Faustino. Cens Grupo EPM reported that service has been restored to most affected areas, with maintenance teams continuing to work on full normalization for remaining customers.
Escalation of Violence Attributed to ELN
This incident was one of three attacks that occurred within hours in the Cúcuta metropolitan area.Separate attacks targeting the CAI Morichal police station and a patrol in La Concordia resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injuries to six others. The Metropolitan Police of Cúcuta has attributed all three events to the National Liberation Army (ELN) as retaliation for recent security operations against the armed group.
