FRANKFURT, germany (AP) — Frankfurt Mayor Petra​ Roth has placed a bet with ​the⁤ city: that residents will donate to the “people for People” aid organization to support education for children in Ethiopia. The initiative, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the charity, aims to‍ raise awareness and funds for the⁢ “ABC 2015” educational project.

Roth, along with television chef Mirko Reeh and almaz Böhm, widow of the charity’s ​founder Karlheinz Böhm, launched the city-wide challenge. The goal: to have at least one-third of Frankfurt’s 688,492 residents donate one euro each between May 2 and June 9, 2011.

A‍ Bet Born from ⁢a Bet

The “People for People” organization originated​ from a similar bet made by⁣ actor Karlheinz Böhm on a television show in 1981.Böhm wagered that less than a third of viewers would ⁢donate a mark for ‌Ethiopia. According to almaz Böhm, that initial bet generated 1.2 million marks, laying the foundation ​for the aid organization that has⁤ since assisted over⁢ 4 million ⁤Ethiopians.

“We don’t want‍ to celebrate the anniversary, but draw attention to‌ the emergency,” Böhm saeid, emphasizing the ongoing need for support.

Education as the ‌Focus

To win the ⁢current bet, Frankfurt residents need to donate‍ a‍ total of 229,497 euros.‌ The funds will support the “ABC 2015” project, which aims to improve literacy rates by providing school education ‌to hundreds of⁤ thousands of children. Almaz⁢ Böhm noted that 40% of Ethiopian children lack access to schooling. The funds raised in Frankfurt are earmarked for building⁢ a ‌school for 1,400 children.

Community Support

Roth has enlisted the⁣ support of several local figures, including lottery official​ Franziska ⁤Reichenbacher, business ‍journalist Frank Lehmann, comedian Henni Nachtsheim, former football world champion Thomas Berthold, and television chef Mirko Reeh. ⁣If the bet is lost, Roth and Reeh will prepare and distribute green sauce,⁢ a local specialty, for charity.
