Conflicting statements emerge in ashling Murphy murder case
The examination into the murder of Ashling Murphy was intricate by conflicting statements from Marek and Lubomir Puska Jr., brothers of the primary suspect, Jozef Puska. While Jozef Puska was hospitalized for stab wounds, his brothers initially failed to disclose crucial information to the gardaí (Irish police).
Marek Puska initially described life in Mucklagh as idyllic. He later stated that on the day of the murder, Lucia Istokova informed him that Jozef had left the house without his phone. Marek then claimed he went to Tullamore to find his brother, later reporting him missing with lubomir jr.
Two days after the murder, Marek omitted any mention of seeing Jozef that night in his first statement to the gardaí. however, four days later,he provided a second statement, revealing that he and Lubomir Jr. found Jozef at home around 9 p.m. in a “poor state,” with facial injuries and three stab wounds to his abdomen.
Marek claimed Jozef told him he had been trying to commit suicide when a woman intervened. According to Marek, Jozef said he “might have hurt that person” or “could have cut her.” Marek later admitted Jozef confessed to harming a woman who tried to stop him from self-harming, saying he ”struck out and cut her” and that it was “probably bad.”
Marek also told his wife, Jozefina Grundzova, that Puska had “murdered that girl,” inferring this from Jozef’s vague account.Marek’s lawyer argued that his client’s initial silence was due to fear of being implicated in helping his brother or covering up the burning of clothes.

Lubomir Jr. also initially lied to officers, stating he saw Jozef briefly on the afternoon of the murder and that Jozef seemed “a bit sad.” He later recanted, admitting that Jozef arrived home that night with injuries and confessed nothing had happened. Lubomir Jr. said his parents then took Jozef to Dublin.
Lubomir Jr. explained his initial dishonesty by saying, “It felt strange to tell on my brother. I never had to do it before.” He later denied telling anyone to dispose of the knife used in the murder, which remains unrecovered.
Prosecutors described Lubomir Jr.’s revelations as a “drip drip” of information. his defense argued that his statements reflected a man struggling to reconcile his family loyalty with his duty to society. Six days after the murder, Lubomir Jr.told gardaí, ”If you find out it was him, well let him. He is going to pay for what he did.”

Viera Gaziova testified that Lubomir Jr. told her Jozef had “confessed that he killed a girl.” She also admitted that Lubomir Jr. instructed her via Facebook Messenger to burn Jozef’s clothes. Gaziova and Grundzova admitted to burning the clothes, which had blood on them.
Gaziova explained her initial misleading statement by saying, “We were afraid of the guards when they came.” She added, “I was afraid I would end up on the street with my children.”
Her lawyer argued that Gaziova did not believe Jozef had killed anyone and acted on her husband’s request without understanding the gravity of the situation. Grundzova’s lawyer argued she could not have known Jozef had murdered ms.Murphy when she helped destroy the clothes, acting only on ”nonsense” comments.

Prosecutors argued that all the accused knew what Jozef had done by 9:30 p.m. on the night of the murder. They asserted that the brothers withheld vital information to shield Jozef, while jozefina and Viera burned the clothes to impede his arrest and prosecution.
