Borno State High Court Judge Regains Freedom After Abduction

After being held captive for months, Borno State High Court Judge Haruna Mselia has finally regained his freedom. Judge Mselia was abducted on June 24 by suspected Boko Haram members while traveling from Biu to Maiduguri with his wife, driver, and police escort.

The abduction resulted in the death of Judge Mselia’s police escort. His release was confirmed through a message posted on the Borno Lawyers’ WhatsApp group, which expressed gratitude for his safe return.

However, Judge Mselia’s wife and driver remain in captivity. The Borno Lawyers’ group has urged people to continue praying for their safe return. Details surrounding Judge Mselia’s release, including whether a ransom was paid, are still unclear.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Maiduguri chapter president, Hamza Jannah, confirmed Judge Mselia’s release. Prior to his abduction, Judge Mselia had transitioned from the judiciary to private practice in May 2012.

Borno State has been severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and displacement of many residents. The state’s judiciary has also been impacted by the ongoing conflict.

Judge Mselia’s release brings hope to the people of Borno State, and efforts are being made to ensure the safe return of his wife and driver.
