M3GAN 2.0 Embraces “Bad Straight Camp” in AI Horror Sequel
Updated June 25, 2025
The “M3GAN” sequel, “M3GAN 2.0,” doubles down on the campy elements that made the original a hit. The film embraces what some are calling “Bad Straight Camp,” blending horror with over-the-top aesthetics and humor. This approach aims to broaden its appeal while still catering to its dedicated fanbase.
The original “M3GAN” unexpectedly became a viral sensation, notably resonating with queer audiences. “M3GAN 2.0” acknowledges this, incorporating self-aware humor and exaggerated scenarios. Examples include M3GAN dancing for an audience and gliding in a wingsuit while singing Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.”
While these moments are intentionally meme-worthy, they also feel somewhat calculated. Unlike the first film’s spontaneous camp, the sequel’s chaos feels more studio-driven. Still, this obvious effort adds to the film’s charm for some viewers.
Writer-director Gerard Johnstone continues to explore the dangers of AI, reflecting real-world concerns about AI growth. Ivanna Sakhno delivers a strong performance as Amelia, though her character’s screen time is limited. The film occasionally gets bogged down in over-explaining its plot.
Despite its flaws, “M3GAN 2.0” offers plenty of entertainment with killer robots, government corruption, and action movie tropes. While it may lack scares, the film features fun combat sequences between M3GAN and Amelia, as well as a fight scene with Allison Williams.
The film’s humor and action-packed nonsense make it a guilty pleasure for fans of the genre. “M3GAN 2.0” opens in theaters June 27, 2025.
