france has initiated a judicial inquiry into Takata airbags following several deaths linked to the defective products. The Paris prosecutor’s office announced the probe on Friday,focusing on ”deceptive commercial practices,aggravated deception,non-informing buyers of a product of its non-compliance relating to substantial quality,[and] endangering the life of others.”
The investigation will consolidate three fatal accident inquiries under the Jirs prosecutor’s office in Paris. Authorities may bring in investigating judges as procedures advance, the prosecutor’s office stated.
The inquiry follows three preliminary investigations into Takata airbag explosions:
- November 18, 2023, in Galan, Hautes-Pyrénées: A 1972-born man driving a C3 died.
- December 28, 2021, in Trois-Ilets, Martinique: A 1954-born man driving a C3 died.
- June 11, 2025, in Reims: A 1988-born woman driving a C3 died.
Other Legal Actions
The prosecutor’s office noted that the Jirs de Paris had already opened an investigation after complaints from the UFC-Que Choisir association and Stellantis vehicle owners with takata airbags. other prosecutors were asked to consolidate related procedures.
On April 10, the Chancellery requested that the Jirs de Paris consolidate all investigations into the consequences of these airbag failures ”in the interest of good management of justice.”
The Paris prosecutor’s office added that other legal information has been opened and complaints filed in other jurisdictions related to airbags from other car manufacturers. The Ministry of Transport reports 18 deaths and 25 injuries in France, including 16 deaths and 24 injuries overseas, linked to defective airbags.
Citroën’s Recall
the Takata airbag scandal has plagued the automotive industry as 2014. The airbags, designed to protect passengers, can explode due to a degrading gas, especially in hot and humid conditions, sending shrapnel toward drivers.
Following the fatal accident in Reims, Citroën, after a request from the Minister of Transport, Philippe Tabarot, requested the immediate immobilization of C3 and DS3 models in Europe still equipped with the dangerous airbags, regardless of production year, followed by repairs.
In early 2025, Citroën had already initiated an immobilization of approximately 236,900 C3 and DS3 models in northern France, following an initial campaign in southern Europe in spring 2024 for specific models. These measures initially excluded cars made after 2013.
For models manufactured from 2014, a recall via letter without a “stop drive” order began in May 2025. A stellantis spokesperson stated that analyses did not indicate degradation risks beyond 2013, prior to the death in Reims. The manufacturer estimates that nearly a third of the vehicles still require repairs. Globally, manufacturers have had to immobilize millions of vehicles to replace the defective Takata airbags.
