The 2024 National Judo Championship officially began at the Tianjin Stadium on October 24th. The Tianjin team made a strong start, securing 2 silver and 1 bronze medal on the first day of competition.
Hui Xinran, fresh from her gold medal win at the World Youth Championships in early October, took the runner-up spot in the women’s 48kg category. Meanwhile, young player Zhang Yuanli and veteran Wang Xiaohui won 1 silver and 1 bronze respectively in the women’s 52kg category.
This prestigious competition is sponsored by the Weightlifting Wrestling Judo Sports Management Center of the State Sports General Administration and the China Judo Association. It is hosted by the Tianjin Municipal Sports Bureau, Tianjin Weightlifting Wrestling Judo Boxing Taekwondo Sports Management Center, and Tianjin Judo Association.
The four-day event features three competition events: male and female individual competition and mixed male and female team competition. All events use single-elimination quarter-finals rematches. The championship has attracted nearly 700 players from 32 teams across the country, including all provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, industry sports associations, and sports colleges and universities.
This year’s championship has introduced a new threshold, where only the top 32 athletes in the national athlete points ranking or the top 8 athletes in the National Youth Judo Championship (U20 group) can register to participate. The Tianjin team has a total of 6 male players and 17 female players shortlisted for the competition.
According to Zhao Zhishan, the head coach of the Tianjin Judo Team, “I am quite satisfied with the performance of the players. Although the young player Tao Yuying lost the first game today, she is still very young and participated in the adult competition at the age of 17, which is also a training for her, but there are still some regrets.”
