Judy Greer Reveals Why She Turned Down a Role on Modern Family
Judy Greer did not want to settle down in her career. In a recent podcast, she shared that she declined an audition for a lead role on the popular sitcom Modern Family. Greer, known for her roles in Halloween Kills and Best Christmas Pageant Ever, was concerned about being labeled as "America’s mom" at that point.
During the podcast with Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Greer discussed her decision to turn down the audition for Claire Dunphy, a role that eventually went to Julie Bowen. Greer explained that this time in her career involved portraying characters with children. She noted that while movies come and go, a successful TV role could define her public image as a mother.
Greer revealed she "didn’t even want kids" at the time. She thought the role felt limiting compared to her other projects and cherished her freedom. "I like traveling a lot, and I like doing all these movies," she said. Greer was in her early 30s and felt unprepared for such a defining role.
The series aired for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020 and won 22 Emmy Awards, including five for Outstanding Comedy Series. Although she did not join the main cast, Greer made a guest appearance as Denise, an ex-girlfriend of Phil Dunphy, in season 1.
Additionally, Greer discussed the stress of auditioning and called Julia Roberts her inspiration as a movie star. The full episode of Ferguson’s podcast featuring Greer provides deeper insights into her thoughts and experiences in Hollywood.
