Julian Hall debuts for USMNT while remaining eligible for Poland

When forward Julian Hall made his U.S. men’s national team debut, he stepped onto the field wearing a matronymic middle name on his jersey that his new audience may not have immediately recognized: Zakrzewski. Born and raised in New York to an American father and Polish mother, the 18-year-old has worn Zakrzewski on the back of his shirt for the entirety of his career, honoring his Polish heritage from his earliest senior appearances with Red Bull New York at age 15 in September 2023.

Hall marked his international debut in a 4-1 win over Peru by scoring a goal and providing an assist off the bench, according to match reports. That performance made him the third-youngest player to register an assist for the U.S. team in the modern era. As manager Mauricio Pochettino leads a transition in the player selection pool for the national squad, he was among 11 athletes who collected their maiden cap facing Peru. The American tally was completed by fellow teenager Justin Ellis netting the opening goal in the fourth minute alongside World Cup participants Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter.

International Eligibility and Recruiting Efforts

Hall’s heritage means he is eligible to represent both the United States and Poland, and the forward has yet to formally commit to either national team. In an interview with the New York Post earlier this month, Hall stated that his future was “definitely not solidified” despite receiving a call-up to the USMNT. The Polish Football Association has already attempted to secure the player’s allegiance, with President Cezary Kulesza meeting Hall’s mother, Agnieszka, in New York in April and presenting her with a Poland jersey bearing the name Zakrzewski on the back before posting the photo on social media.

Days before reporting to his first USMNT camp, Hall noted that Poland had not been in contact regarding their upcoming matches, leaving him focused entirely on performing for the American side. I just wanted to take this opportunity that presented itself with the U.S., and when I go there, I’m going to do as much as I can to make an impact and do well, Hall said last week when asked if Poland had been in touch.

Current Club Form and Cap Status

Hall joined the USMNT camp in the midst of a productive breakout season with the Red Bulls, recording 13 goals and three assists across all competitions. Although he made his senior appearance in the victory over Peru, Hall is not yet cap-tied to the United States. A player with dual eligibility can become cap-tied after playing three games for a senior national team or upon making an appearance in official competition.
