Julian Lennon: ‘I’m not part of the Beatles inner circle – I never have been’ | Photography
Julian Lennon Steps Out From Behind the Lens
From music to philanthropy, Julian Lennon has always forged his own path. Now, the son of a Beatle is capturing the world through a new lens – photography.
Julian Lennon, 61, is a man of many talents. A Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, children’s author, documentary filmmaker, philanthropist – the list goes on. But his latest endeavor takes him in a new direction: fine art photography.
Lennon’s debut book, Life’s Fragile Moments, offers a glimpse into his world through a collection of intimate and evocative images spanning over two decades. From reportage taken during his travels for the White Feather foundation, his charity dedicated to peace and environmentalism, to candid shots of his half-brother Sean Lennon on tour, the book is a testament to Lennon’s keen eye and ability to capture the essence of a moment.
“I think I was about 11 years old when I first whent out to the US to see Dad, and he had a very simple brown leather Polaroid camera that he used a fair amount – I have it here,” Lennon shared, recalling his early captivation with photography. “That immediacy was exciting.”
While he dabbled with film photography, Lennon found his true calling with the advent of digital. “Hell no, I’ve always done everything organically,” he said when asked about formal training. “I never learned to read and write music. I’m self-taught and I prefer it that way. Most photographers know exactly what they’re aiming for; I don’t know what I’ve got until I look later at the photos. If I knew what I was doing I think I’d lose that spark, that creativity.”
One of the most striking images in the book is the cover shot: Charlene Wittstock, moments before marrying Prince Albert II of Monaco.
“That was truly bizarre,” Lennon recounted. “Charlene was in this very small room with the hairdresser, the hairdresser’s assistant, the makeup artist, the makeup artist’s assistant – it was like a beehive. She was looking thoroughly [continues description of the scene]…”
Julian Lennon: Stepping Out of the Beatles’ Shadow and into His Own Spotlight
Julian Lennon, son of the legendary john Lennon, is on a mission to carve his own path in the music world. While forever linked to his iconic father, Julian is determined to build a legacy independent of the Beatles’ shadow.
“I felt it would be nice to tell my side of the story,” lennon shared,”but it’s not going to be your standard autobiographical book. I want something based more on art and emotions.”
Driven by a desire to establish his own artistic identity, Lennon has focused on building a strong body of work. “It had always been, ‘John Lennon’s son, john Lennon’s son’,” he explained, “and I’m going, for f’s sake. I said, what I need to do for me, first and foremost, is to build up a body of work, a foundation that I can stand on, that nobody can take away from me.And I continue to do so. it’s not to show off, it’s just to prove to myself that I can actually do this stuff. I’m not interested in fighting other people’s opinions.”
Lennon’s last album, Jude, was released in 2022. He recently formed a band and rehearsed in Los angeles, hoping to showcase his music on American late-night television and British shows like Graham norton and Jools Holland.
“I put a band together at the end of last year and did some rehearsals in Los Angeles, and I was amazed at how great we sounded,” Lennon revealed. “The idea was to hit a couple of the American late-night TV shows and the likes of Graham Norton and Jools holland, but sadly nobody would have me on, so that was a bit of a letdown. I’m not saying I’m leaving music alone, but I was heartbroken by that, I still am.”
Despite the setback, Lennon remains undeterred. He continues to create music, driven by a passion for his art and a desire to connect with audiences on his own terms.
The recent resurgence of interest in the Beatles, fueled by projects like Peter Jackson’s Get back, the restored Let It Be, and Martin Scorsese’s Beatles ’64, has brought renewed attention to the band’s legacy. While this renewed interest may benefit Lennon in some ways, he remains focused on forging his own path and establishing his own unique identity as a musician.
Finding His own Tune: Julian Lennon Steps Out of the beatles’ shadow
Julian Lennon, son of the legendary John Lennon, has spent a lifetime navigating the complexities of being born into music royalty. While the recent release of “The Beatles: Get Back” has brought renewed attention to the Lennon name, Julian is focused on forging his own path, one note at a time.
“It’s news to me half the time,” Lennon admitted. “I’m not part of the inner circle – I never have been. You have to realize that when Dad left, when I was between three and…”
His voice trails off, a poignant reminder of the complexities of his childhood. Lennon was only five years old when his parents divorced, leaving him and his mother, Cynthia, to navigate life outside the whirlwind of Beatlemania.
“it was just Mum and me,” he shared. “We had nothing to do with the Beatles or Dad.”
While Lennon acknowledges the unique circumstances of his upbringing, he chooses to focus on the positive. “I’d rather be excited and impressed by what they did and continue to do,” he said, referring to his father and the Beatles. “As a fan, I’m just as curious as anybody else, even though I do find myself going, how is it possible that there’s another Beatles film?”
Lennon credits his mother, Cynthia, for teaching him the importance of resilience and positivity. “I saw that that’s the only way forward,” he explained. “You take the high road, you be the better person and try to learn from all the crap that’s thrown at you.”
Despite facing his own challenges, including bouts of depression and anxiety, Lennon remains determined to maintain a positive outlook. “Wallowing’s no good – been there, done that,” he said.
One of Lennon’s proudest achievements is overcoming a heavy smoking habit.”I was one of the heaviest smokers you would ever meet,” he admitted. “I quit cold turkey and fell into a deep depression for a while, but I came out the other side.”
Today, Lennon is focused on his own music career, releasing albums and touring internationally. He’s also a passionate advocate for environmental causes, using his platform to raise awareness about climate change and ocean conservation.
For Julian Lennon, life has been a journey of self-discovery, a constant balancing act between honoring his legacy and forging his own path. And while the shadow of the Beatles may always loom large, Lennon is determined to make his own music, his own way.a couple of years but I’ve stuck to it.”
Looking ahead to 2025, Lennon encourages others to embrace optimism. “What would it be like if you didn’t do anything, if you weren’t positive?” he asks. “What if you don’t write that book, what if you don’t take those photographs telling the truth from the other side of the world, what if you don’t make those documentaries that give people options or understanding – what would happen if that was the case? There’s only one choice in my book. stay the course, believe that things can be better.”
Lennon’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, positivity, and the pursuit of one’s own path, even in the face of exceptional circumstances.
