Spanish Prosecutors Drop Examination into julio Iglesias Sexual Assault Allegations
MADRID (AP) – Spanish state prosecutors announced Friday they are closing their initial investigation into accusations of sexual assault against Julio Iglesias, citing a lack of jurisdiction. The allegations stem from incidents reported in the Bahamas and the Dominican republic.
Prosecutors opened the investigation earlier this month to determine if Spain’s National Court had the authority to pursue the case. They concluded it did not.
The allegations involve the 82-year-old Grammy-winning singer. A woman, identified only as Fabiola Santiago, filed a complaint in February 2023 alleging Iglesias sexually assaulted her in 1975. The Associated Press reported that Santiago alleges the assault occurred after a concert in Puerto Rico, and she later sought legal action in the Dominican Republic.
According to The Guardian, Santiago claims she was taken to a hotel room by Iglesias and assaulted. She initially reported the incident to authorities in the Dominican Republic in 1975, but the case was later closed.
The Spanish prosecutor’s office stated that as the alleged crimes did not occur within Spanish territory, the National Court does not have jurisdiction.
