Residents and business owners in anacostia are initiating a new tradition to honor those who sought freedom in Washington, D.C., as the nation commemorates Juneteenth. The 11th Street bridge, a link between Anacostia and downtown D.C. since 1965, stands near the site of the former Eastern Branch Navy yard Bridge, a historical pathway to freedom.
A plaque commemorates the enslaved individuals who crossed the old bridge to freedom in D.C. Community members gathered last Saturday for a walk beneath the 11th Street Bridge, remembering this history.
Ron Moten, a community activist, highlighted the historical importance of the area and his desire to educate others. This week, Moten announced the Juneteenth Jubilee: Freedom & Unity Walk to celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, on June 19.
