San Diego Celebrates Juneteenth With Diverse Events
San Diego County will mark Juneteenth with a series of celebrations Thursday,honoring the day in 1865 when approximately 250,000 enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 thru the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, signed by President Joe Biden.
The Juneteenth role in American history is significant,and several events are planned across the county to commemorate the occasion. These events highlight Black history, culture, and community.
Among the scheduled Juneteenth celebrations:
- The WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park will host ”Honoring the Legacy of Black Seminoles, Maroon societies, and John Horse” from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event features Micco/Chief Thomi Perryman, a hereditary chief and founder of the Warren Perryman Foundation for Native American Research, as the keynote speaker. The celebration focuses on the Black Seminoles, descendants of africans who escaped slavery and found refuge with Seminole Indians in Florida.
- North park’s Louisiana Purchase will host a Juneteenth Block party from noon to 7 p.m., offering live music, DJs, New Orleans-inspired cuisine, craft cocktails, and goods from Black-owned businesses.
- The San Diego Black Arts Festival, showcasing music, dance, and art, continues through Saturday. Thursday’s events begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Diversionary Theater.
