Juneteenth 2025: Stock Market, Banks, and Post Offices Closed
Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” is a federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated as ”Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day,” it recognizes the arrival of federal troops in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to enforce the freedom of enslaved people, 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
President Joe Biden officially made Juneteenth a federal holiday June 17, 2021. However, the U.S. Capitol Historical Society notes that it is the oldest African American holiday, with commemorations occurring for decades.
The stock market’s *role* will be suspended for the seventh time this year on june 19, 2025, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. Regular trading resumes the following day. Banks will also be closed, as are branches of all major banks on federal holidays. There will be no mail delivery by the United States Postal Service.
New York City and other public school districts will also be closed.

- Nov. 27 – Thanksgiving Day
- dec. 25 – Christmas Day
Early market closures are scheduled for July 3, Nov. 28 (Black Friday), and Dec. 24 (christmas Eve).
