Junri Maki: The Osaka Evessa Powerhouse Taking Home the BBS AWARD 2023-24 MIP
Continued from “The Deep Path of Exploration” (part 2)
Life is just killing time until you die.
The abundance of entertainment in the world seems to prove this.
For basketball to stand out from the sea of saturated content, it will take more than just high-level play.
In recent years, many players have expanded their activities outside of the court, making a significant contribution to the expansion and development of the market.
Maki Junri is one of them.
If you try googling “Maki Hayato”, a lot of different results will come up.
X、Instagram、note、Voicy …
It seems that these days it has been consolidated into his official fan club, but the regular updates prior to that show his hardworking personality.
For feature phone users, just imagining the effort required to manage all these accounts is daunting.
Digital natives, for sure.
「I think it was because I was bored because of the coronavirus pandemic, but I think the Ryukyu Golden Kings and the land of Okinawa were very special. It’s not like you just have to play basketball. How should I put it… How do you build a career as a professional athlete? I think that’s true in private life as well, and I felt that way when I went to Ryukyu, both on and off the court.」
Sports have the power to inspire people’s hearts.
The humanity of the players who create the story on the court sometimes doubles that power and sometimes halves it.
「I also felt that I should think about how to be a professional athlete. Even in high school, if you don’t submit your assignments properly, you can’t participate in practice, and my parents have always taught me that you can’t just play basketball and neglect your main job as a student, both in high school and college. If I stopped going to school, I’d only be playing basketball, and I’d have more free time, so I thought I’d have to think about that sort of thing.」

Leisure is the mother of philosophy.
With our busy lives, it’s difficult to take the time to think deeply about anything.
In today’s society, where working makes it difficult to read books, the fact that he had an excessive amount of leisure time at the start of his career made him decide to take action.
「Nowadays, even if you’re not a basketball player, you can still get involved in the world, so I feel like I want to take advantage of that. Personally, I know that being a professional athlete means you don’t know when it’s going to end, and it’s likely to be short, and the moment I realized I definitely couldn’t continue playing basketball for the rest of my life, I felt a sense of crisis and wondered if there was anything I could do, or what I would do after basketball ended. I started to think about it.」
