Justin Sun Eats $6.2 Million Banana Artwork: NFT or Just Art?
Chinese cryptocurrency businessman Justin Sun bought a banana art piece for $6.2 million. The artwork, titled Comedian, consists of a banana duct-taped to a wall and was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. After acquiring the art, Sun ate the banana and shared his experience on social media.
In his post, Sun described the banana’s taste, noting it tasted different from an ordinary banana. He claimed it reminded him of the now-rare Gros Michel variety. Sun also expressed gratitude to Shah Alam, the 74-year-old vendor who sold him the banana for 25 cents. He planned to buy 100,000 bananas to distribute for free to Alam’s customers.
However, Alam pointed out his concerns regarding Sun’s proposal. He explained that the profit from selling 100,000 bananas would be low, and that he is just an employee, not the owner, of the fruit stand. Alam’s salary, which supports his modest lifestyle, would not change due to a banana giveaway.
This is not Sun’s first high-priced purchase. In 2019, he won a $4.8 million bid to have lunch with Warren Buffett. He also tried to join a Blue Origin space trip in 2021, which was later canceled.
