Justin Welby Resigns as Archbishop of Canterbury Amid Child Abuse Scandal

Justin Welby Resigns as Archbishop of Canterbury Amid Child Abuse Scandal

November 12, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Recent Resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby

Archbishop Justin Welby, the head of the Church of England and the global Anglican Church, has resigned effective immediately. This decision comes after a review found that he and other senior church leaders failed to adequately handle a sex abuse scandal involving a British lawyer, John Smyth.

Background of the Scandal

John Smyth was accused of physically and sexually abusing over 100 boys and young men in the United Kingdom and other countries during his involvement with Christian summer camps in the 1970s and 1980s. Despite complaints filed, Smyth never faced legal proceedings. He died in South Africa in 2018 without being held accountable for his crimes.

Independent Review Findings

The independent review revealed that the responses of the Church of England and other authorities were ineffective and amounted to a cover-up. The review highlighted that despite efforts by some individuals to report the abuse, the church’s actions were insufficient, allowing Smyth to continue abusing without consequence until his death.

Archbishop Welby’s Response and Resignation

In response to the review, Archbishop Welby acknowledged the failures of the church in handling the matter. He stated that he was unaware of the abuse until 2013, the year he became the Archbishop. However, he admitted that his response after being informed was inadequate. The Archbishop expressed profound regret and apologized for the cover-up, stating that new checks and balances have been introduced to prevent similar incidents.

Reaction and Calls for Accountability

The resignation has been met with calls for further accountability. Victims like Andrew Morse, who was abused by Smyth, have demanded more action from church leaders. Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley also called for Welby’s resignation, questioning the church’s ability to protect its members from abuse.

This resignation marks a significant moment in the Anglican Church’s efforts to address historical abuses and ensure a safer environment for its members moving forward.
