The February 4, 2026, marks the return of the K League Super Cup after a nearly two-decade hiatus. The annual match, contested between the champions of K League 1 and the Korea Cup, was re-established for the 2026 season, bringing back a tradition that began in 1999.

A History Interrupted and Revived

Originally launched in 1999, the K League Super Cup served as the curtain-raiser to the South Korean football season. The competition ran annually until 2006, before being discontinued in 2007. For seven iterations, it pitted the league champions against the Korea Cup winners in a single-match showdown. The revival of the Super Cup signifies a renewed commitment to showcasing the best of South Korean club football and building excitement for the upcoming K League season.

The competition’s history includes a notable achievement by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2004. They became the first and so far only, Korea Cup champion to win the Super Cup, defeating an opponent yet to be determined for the 2026 edition.

Sponsorship and Format

The 2026 K League Super Cup is sponsored by Coupang Play, adding a commercial dimension to the event. Throughout its history, the Super Cup has seen various sponsors, including TicketLink (1999-2000), Posdata (2001-2002), and Samsung Electronics (2006, as the Samsung Hauzen Super Cup). Samsung Electronics invested 3.4 billion won in 2006 to sponsor 279 games, including the Super Cup competition.

The format remains consistent with its original structure: a single match between the K League 1 champions and the Korea Cup champions. The match is hosted at the home venue of the K League 1 champions, providing a home-field advantage. In the event of a draw after regulation time, the match proceeds to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.

Past Champions and Notable Matches

Suwon Samsung Bluewings holds the record for the most K League Super Cup championships, with three titles. Their inaugural victory came in March 20, 1999, against Anyang LG Cheetahs, a dominant 5-1 win at the Suwon Sports Complex. Drakulić scored a hat-trick in that match, with Shin Hong-gi adding a penalty. Baek Hyung-jin scored the lone goal for Anyang LG Cheetahs.

The following year, in March 12, 2000, Suwon Samsung Bluewings again contested the Super Cup, this time against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma. The match ended in a 0-0 draw after extra time, with Suwon ultimately prevailing 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out, also at the Suwon Sports Complex.

Anyang LG Cheetahs secured a victory in March 18, 2001, defeating Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 2-1 after extra time.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With the Super Cup’s return, anticipation is building to see which teams will compete for the title in 2026. The 2025 K League 1 champions, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, led by Gustavo Poyet, will host the Korea Cup champions. The match promises to be a compelling clash between the league’s best and the cup specialists.

The re-establishment of the K League Super Cup not only provides an early competitive fixture for the top clubs but also adds another layer of prestige to both the K League 1 championship and the Korea Cup. The competition’s history, marked by memorable matches and dominant performances from clubs like Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, sets the stage for a new chapter in South Korean football. Fans will be eager to see if Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors can add another Super Cup title to their impressive list of achievements, or if a new champion will emerge in this revitalized competition.

The return of the Super Cup is a positive development for the K League, signaling a commitment to enhancing the league’s profile and providing fans with more exciting football action. The sponsorship from Coupang Play further demonstrates the growing commercial interest in South Korean football, and the single-match format ensures a high-stakes, dramatic encounter to kick off the new season.
