Kaikōura is experiencing a meaningful tourism resurgence, with domestic visitors leading the charge through a busy summer and autumn season.Local tourism operators and the Kaikōura District Council, working together under the Destination Kaikōura partnership, are reporting robust numbers and increased spending, signalling a healthy recovery and promising outlook for the region.
A Season of Success
The picturesque South Island town has seen a steady stream of visitors, with key holiday periods like the King’s Birthday weekend, Matariki weekend, and the July school holidays proving particularly popular. This strong domestic support has translated into tangible economic benefits for Kaikōura.
Key Performance Indicators
April Surge: April stood out as a particularly strong month,with domestic visitor spending climbing by an extraordinary 15% compared to the previous year. Accommodation bookings also saw a healthy increase of 7%. May Momentum: This positive trend continued into May, with domestic visitor spend rising by 13% and guest nights increasing by 14% when compared to May 2024.
Geographic Reach: The majority of these domestic travellers hailed from Canterbury, but the data also indicates a welcome rise in visitors from Auckland and Wellington.
International Visitor Growth
Beyond the domestic market, Kaikōura is also witnessing a positive uptick in international visitors. While specific accommodation data for international guests is affected by pre-paid bookings, the overall spend from international visitors (excluding accommodation) has increased by 13%. This suggests either a higher average spend per visitor or a greater number of day-trippers exploring the region’s attractions.
What’s Driving the Growth?
While a cruise ship representative cited cost increases as a factor in a drop in cruise ship numbers, the overall picture for Kaikōura’s tourism sector is overwhelmingly positive, driven by strong domestic engagement and a growing international interest. the town’s natural beauty, unique wildlife encounters, and adventure activities continue to draw visitors seeking memorable experiences.

The positive momentum is expected to continue with a packed schedule of events and activities planned for the coming months. These include:
September: The Kaikōura Whale Run and the Kaikōura Hop will attract participants and spectators.
October: The school holidays, the Mountains to Sea Marathon, and Labor Weekend offer further opportunities for visitors to explore.
