Kaikōura Coast Faces Limited Tsunami Warning Time

The latest tsunami hazard maps reveal a sobering reality for residents of the Kaikōura coast in New Zealand: if a large offshore earthquake occurs, they may have as little as a few minutes to respond. This dire scenario, based on a one-in-2,500-year earthquake event, has been the focus of recent community meetings and has significant implications for disaster preparedness.

On a Tuesday evening session, Helen Jack, Environment Canterbury’s natural hazards scientist, addressed the Kaikōura community. She presented new information and simulations that highlight the potential impact of a tsunami wave triggered by a major earthquake in the Hikurangi subduction zone. With over 20 years of experience studying earthquakes, Jack advised the residents thoughtfully,

“It can be a little bit scary and it’s OK to be like ‘oh that’s quite a lot’.”

“The computer generated wave simulation played for the community showed waves hitting the coast. The timelines showed that locals might have just 5 to 10 minutes before a tsunami hits,” Jack stressed. Despite the overwhelming information, she maintained a calm and informative demeanor,

Including comments about the potential heights of the tsunami across steep coastlines:

“We could, under a really worst case scenario, be looking at maybe up to 10, 20 meters, maybe even a little bit more.”

This dire warning is still fresh in the minds of Kaikōura residents, who remember the 2016 earthquake. that cut off public transportation along the coastline. Even more chilling is the revelation that the evacuations zones has expanded to include Oaro (South) and Kekerengu (North) as well. Glen Burridge, a resident, said,

“The community is eager to know about the stricter precautions.”

He went on to say, “It makes sense to be ready, we should know what we need and to plan our evacuations .”

Echoing Glen Burridge, local resident Erica O’Connor said,

“I wanted to learn about the new developments to plan our evacuation and minimize any loss arising.”

The revised tsunami safety areas increase the chances of survival by voluntary evacuation. Kaikōura District Council CEO Will Doughty speaks more on this:

“Particularly there’s no way around it, Kekerengu in the north and Oaro in the south previously outside the zone but now inside in that worst case event.”

“It doesn’t hurt even for those who are pessimistic to know what we need to house and where to do it so.”

“What we want people to do just have a quick plan for just ourselves and our family so we know what to do in that eventuality.
