Kalle Rovanperä has announced that he will retire from the World Rally Championship (WRC) at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The Finnish driver concludes a career that includes two world titles and 17 rally victories, as well as multiple records for being the youngest ever to achieve various milestones in the sport.
The announcement comes as Rovanperä prepares to close a remarkable stint in the WRC, having established himself as one of the most successful drivers of his generation. He became the youngest WRC-FIA World Rally Championship Champion in history, winning the world championship at 22 years old.
Overcoming the Home Rally Hurdle
A significant milestone in Rovanperä’s final chapters was his maiden victory at Rally Finland. This win was particularly meaningful as it ended an eight-year period during which no Finnish driver had won the event.

Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen secured a 35-point victory, leading a historic result for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, which saw the team occupy the first five positions in the rally. Rovanperä defeated his teammate Takamoto Katsuta by 39.2 seconds.
The victory was the fastest in the history of the WRC, with Rovanperä recording an average speed of 129.9km/h (80.7mph). The win followed several years of frustration at the event. in 2022, he finished second to Ott Tänak, and in both 2023 and 2024, he crashed out while leading.
I have always said I didn’t think it was super special, but it feels super good now. With the support from all the Finnish people during the weekend, it already feels we need to do it for them, and also because the last few years we have been close. To finally do it now, it feels super relieving and nice.

Rovanperä noted that achieving the win in Jyvaskyla, the hometown of both himself and Halttunen, was special and represented a primary goal for his career in the WRC.
Challenges in the 2025 Season
Despite the triumph in Finland, the 2025 season has presented significant challenges for the double world champion. Rovanperä struggled throughout the year to adapt to the gravel tires provided by Hankook, the control tire supplier introduced for 2025.
These difficulties were evident at Rally Estonia, an event Rovanperä has historically dominated, having won the previous three WRC editions of the race. Despite his affinity for the Estonian roads, where he had spent much of his formative years racing a Toyota Starlet at age 10, he finished fourth overall in the 2025 event.
During the Estonian rally, Rovanperä managed only one stage win, which was the powerstage. He finished nearly one minute behind his teammate Oliver Solberg, who was making his debut in the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1.
Following the event in Estonia, Rovanperä expressed frustration with his performance on gravel, suggesting that if a breakthrough could not happen in Estonia, it was unlikely to happen elsewhere.
