Kamikamica Case Adjourned: Stay of Proceedings Sought

Suva, Fiji – Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, appeared in court today regarding charges brought against him by the Fiji Independent commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The case was adjourned to allow time for an application for a permanent stay of proceedings to be heard in the High Court.

Case Details and Legal Arguments
The court heard that Kamikamica faces a potential maximum prison term of seven years if convicted on the charges. His lawyer, Clarke, referenced section 6 of the Bail Act in his defense. Clarke also stated that an application for a permanent stay of proceedings will be filed in the High Court within the next 12 days. As of October 24, 2024, FICAC had not responded to a request regarding the potential withdrawal of the charges.
Clarke requested 28 days to update the court on the status of the High Court application, a request which was granted by the magistrate.

Kamikamica was instructed not to re-offend and to appear at all future court dates. The matter is scheduled to be called again on the 287th of next month. this date appears to be an error and requires clarification.
