Families of ‌Kanjuruhan Victims Seek $1.1 Million in Compensation

Surabaya, Indonesia – Relatives​ of⁣ victims who perished in the devastating 2022 Kanjuruhan⁣ stadium ‌crush are demanding Rp 17.5 billion (US$1.1 ⁣million) in compensation from five individuals ⁣found guilty of‍ negligence​ in ⁣the⁤ tragedy.

The Witness‌ and ‌victim protection Agency (LPSK), representing the families, filed a‌ petition with the Surabaya District Court on Tuesday, marking the first‍ hearing in the restitution case. Dozens of grieving family members, clad in black and carrying poignant posters demanding a thorough investigation ‍into the tragedy, attended the hearing.

“We‌ hope that the Surabaya District Court ⁣will⁤ grant our request and provide justice ​for those⁣ who suffered injuries or lost loved ones in this tragedy,” said Rianto Wicaksono, an expert staffer with LPSK.

Wicaksono emphasized​ that ​the sought-after restitution would ensure the convicted individuals⁣ take‌ “moral and financial responsibility” for‍ the victims and⁤ their families,aiding in their recovery process.

If approved, the Rp 17.5 billion compensation would be distributed among the ⁣families of 73 victims who were injured or lost their lives in the deadly stampede. Each family would receive approximately Rp 250‌ million.

The Kanjuruhan ⁢stadium crush, which occurred on October 1, 2022, following a football ‍match in Malang, East Java, claimed the lives‌ of 135 people‍ and injured hundreds more.The tragedy sparked national outrage and led to a thorough investigation into the events leading up to ‌the ‍disaster.
