Kanlaon Volcano Eruption Prompts Alert for Pyroclastic Flows and Ashfall
Philippine Volcano Erupts, Raising Concerns for Nearby Communities
MANILA – Residents near the Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines are on high alert after the volcano erupted on Monday, spewing ash and potentially deadly pyroclastic density currents (PDCs). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the volcano’s alert level to 3, signifying an increased likelihood of hazardous eruptions.
The explosive eruption, which lasted for nearly four minutes, sent a plume of ash 4 kilometers into the sky, affecting several towns in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, as well as Guimaras and Antique. Phivolcs Director Teresito bacolcol warned that the eruption generated PDCs, fast-moving mixtures of volcanic gases, rocks, and ash that can travel at hundreds of kilometers per hour.
“PDCs are extremely risky,” Bacolcol emphasized. “They can incinerate anything in their path, destroying trees, buildings, and posing a fatal threat to humans. they move so quickly that escape is nearly impractical.”
The Phivolcs chief urged residents within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit to evacuate immediately. He stressed the importance of avoiding inhalation of volcanic ash, which can cause respiratory problems.
“Wear an N95 or surgical mask, or use a wet cloth as a face covering,” Bacolcol advised. “Your safety is paramount.”
The sudden eruption, which occurred without any preceding seismic activity, highlights the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity.Phivolcs continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as they become available.
“It Could Be Fatal”: Volcanic Expert Warns of Dangers After kanlaon Eruption
In the wake of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption on Monday, NewsDirectory3.com spoke with Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol, who painted a stark picture of the potential threat posed by the volcano.
“The eruption generated pyroclastic density currents,or PDCs,” Bacolcol explained, his voice grave. “These are extremely risky. They can incinerate anything in their path, destroying trees, buildings, and posing a fatal threat to humans.”
He stressed the urgent need for residents within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit to evacuate instantly.
“PDCs move so quickly that escape is nearly impractical,” Bacolcol warned.
The eruption, which sent a plume of ash 4 kilometers into the sky, occurred without warning, highlighting the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity.
Bacolcol urged residents further afield to take precautions against the ash, which can cause respiratory problems.
“Wear an N95 or surgical mask, or use a wet cloth as a face covering,” he advised. “Your safety is paramount.”
Phivolcs continues to closely monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
