    • Key Facts ‍and Figures About the Kansas Measles Outbreak

A measles outbreak in southwest Kansas continues to expand, with state health data indicating 23 confirmed cases across six counties ⁤since the start of the year. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reported‌ the first case in Stevens County on March 13, marking the state’s first measles case since 2018. Though, the state’s measles data board also shows two cases, one in January and another in February. A spokesman for the ‍State Health‌ Department said that thes cases where “retrospectively⁣ identified” and are part of the ⁣current outbreak. The other eight cases were recorded this month.

Gov. Laura Kelly stated during a recent health conference in Wichita that state officials are actively monitoring the outbreak, ensuring‍ infected individuals are isolated, and ‍urging residents to get vaccinated.

They are safe and effective.⁣ I have two ⁣children. Both were vaccinated.‌ They are alive and good.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a measles outbreak as three⁢ or more linked ⁢cases, classifying⁤ Kansas among states currently experiencing such⁤ outbreaks. Texas is currently battling a larger outbreak‍ with over 300 cases. Health experts ‌warn that measles can lead to severe complications,‍ hospitalization, or even death.

The‍ CDC‌ has confirmed one death related to the Texas outbreak. Health officials in⁢ New Mexico are investigating a death of an individual who tested positive for measles.

Vaccination Rates and Legislative Action

The ongoing measles spread in Kansas coincides with state legislators considering a bill that could loosen vaccine requirements for ‌child care facilities.

The proposed legislation aims to reduce specific rates and training requirements for early childhood care centers. However, ‌an amendment extends religious exemptions for vaccines required for children in these programs. The Kansas House ⁢of Representatives recently approved the bill with bipartisan support.

Vaccine advocates in Kansas argue that altering these requirements could lower vaccination rates amidst a ⁢growing public health concern.

The more ‍children without vaccinating in an environment, the more probabilities there is that measles or any other disease spread in ⁤the population.

The CDC asserts that approximately 95% of the population must be vaccinated against measles to ensure community protection.Currently, about 90% of Kansas residents‌ are vaccinated against the disease.

Rabbi Moti Rieber,‍ executive director of Kansas Interfaith⁤ Action, expressed concern over the proposed changes to vaccine exemptions, ‍calling the change reckless.‍ He noted that most religions support vaccination.
