Karamoja,Uganda,is struggling with a significant alcoholism problem that threatens to undermine development efforts,according to ayub Mukisa,Executive Director of the Karamoja Anti Corruption Coalition.
Despite government and civil society organizations investing in projects to improve lives, the high rate of alcohol consumption, especially of crude waragi, poses a major obstacle.Studies indicate that the Karamoja sub-region has the highest alcohol consumption rate in Uganda.
The shift from traditional, low-alcohol brews to distilled alcohol, known locally as “waragi” or “etule,” is particularly concerning. villagers in Katanga, Nabilatuk district, report that crude waragi, nicknamed “direct,” is readily available and inexpensive.
Other types of alcohol,such as Express,Spear Gin,and Splendour,are also sold in the region. The ”Karamoja Times Weekly Edition” reported that over 500 deaths in the last 15 years are attributed to alcohol consumption.
