Karen Read Retrial: evidence at Scene Under Scrutiny
DEDHAM, Mass. — The retrial of Karen Read is heavily focused on evidence recovered from the scene where Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe died. Prosecutors are emphasizing broken taillight pieces, while the defense suggests a frame-up.
Special prosecutor Hank Brennan, leading the state’s case, presented a narrative of Read allegedly leaving O’Keefe too die after striking him with her SUV. “She was drunk. She hit him and she left him to die,” Brennan said.
The prosecution highlighted Read’s statement about potentially backing into O’Keefe, which surfaced during a documentary interview. They argue that broken pieces of Read’s taillight indicate she struck O’Keefe. Forensic scientist Andre Porto testified that O’Keefe was a likely DNA match for both the taillight pieces and a broken cocktail glass found nearby. A hair found on Read’s vehicle also matched O’Keefe.
Prosecutors played voicemails in court where Read told O’Keefe, “I (expletive) hate you.” They contend this message arrived while he lay in the snow.

The defense is portraying O’Keefe’s death as a setup, suggesting Read was framed by individuals within O’Keefe’s social circle. Attorney Alan Jackson questioned the thoroughness of the initial investigation, asking,“What happened inside that house, that basement or that garage? what evidence was there for investigators to look into? What did they ignore?” He also pointed to “obvious dog bites” on O’Keefe’s arm.
Defense attorneys argue that Read may have damaged her taillight when backing out of O’Keefe’s driveway the morning after his death. Nicholas Barros, a police officer, testified that the damage to Read’s taillight appeared minimal initially, implying it could have been tampered with later.
A crash expert testified that the damage to Read’s taillight and O’Keefe’s clothing did not align with the prosecution’s account of the SUV striking a body at the alleged speed. The defense also questioned why investigators didn’t examine the house where a party occurred before O’Keefe’s death.
Jennifer McCabe, sister-in-law of the party’s host, Brian Albert, made a web search, “hos long to die in cold,” after O’Keefe’s death. The defense claims this search occurred at 2:30 a.m., suggesting a cover-up. prosecutors argue the search happened later in the morning, after O’keefe’s body was discovered.
The defense noted that the Alberts rehomed their dog and refurbished their basement before selling their home after O’Keefe’s death. Read faces a maximum life sentence if convicted in the Karen Read trial.
