Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg Forces Corrections on Correctiv Investigation
Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has forced the investigative media outlet Correctiv to publish a formal retraction and correction regarding multiple claims made in a profile published on 21 June 2026, according to reporting by Berliner Zeitung. The initial profile, titled Guttenberg: Der Mann aller Märkte, detailed the former German defense minister’s business investments and connections to technology figure Peter Thiel. Following objections from the politician, Correctiv issued corrections on 21 August 2026 addressing several contested statements about his residences, career history, and public appearances.
Disputed Residences and Medical Details Corrected
According to Berliner Zeitung, the retractions target specific personal and medical claims printed in the original June piece. Correctiv had claimed that zu Guttenberg maintained numerous residences, including an estate in a New York suburb. In the published correction, zu Guttenberg stated, I have no residence in a New York suburb,
as reported by Berliner Zeitung.
The outlet also withdrew a remark noting that the former minister wore glasses in 2014 despite having flawless vision. Zu Guttenberg clarified that he wore eyewear that year due to a medical indication,
according to Berliner Zeitung. Correctiv’s original text relied on a report from Merkur, which cited the magazine Bunte regarding comments zu Guttenberg made in 2014 about his children’s opinions on his appearance.
Network Affiliations and Board Memberships Clarified
Berliner Zeitung reports that the corrections extend to high-profile political and corporate networks. Zu Guttenberg disputed any connection to the World Economic Forum’s Global Leaders Program and former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, stating he rejected any such membership and was never part of that group alongside Kurz.
Additional corrections address corporate and research board roles cited in the profile. According to Berliner Zeitung, zu Guttenberg clarified that Peter Munk, rather than John L. Thornton, appointed him to the international advisory board of Barrick Gold Corporation. He also confirmed he never served on the supervisory board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and that his tenure with the public relations agency Edelman ended in May 2026 following advisory roles in 2018 and 2019.
Regarding the annual Bilderberg Conference, zu Guttenberg challenged Correctiv’s assertion that journalists were entirely excluded from the gatherings. Berliner Zeitung reports that the politician clarified that selected
media representatives received invitations to attend. Correctiv did not respond to media inquiries regarding the retractions by Monday afternoon, according to Berliner Zeitung.
