BJP Campaign Marks 50th Anniversary of India’s Emergency

Bengaluru,India – the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka is launching a week-long public awareness campaign,June 22-30,to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency in India. This campaign, organized with groups like Citizens for Social Justice, seeks to educate the public on what the BJP calls a “dark era” of Indian democracy under Congress. The BJP’s initiative focuses on the importance of civil liberties and remembering historical events.
The campaign kicked off with a poster launch at the BJP state office in Bengaluru. A key event is scheduled for June 24 at Town Hall,Bengaluru,where former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda will inaugurate the proceedings. B.S. Yediyurappa,former Karnataka Chief Minister and a MISA detainee during the Emergency,will preside. The BJP aims to highlight the impact of the Emergency on Indian democracy.
C.T.Ravi, BJP MLC and former National General Secretary, emphasized the campaign’s purpose at a press conference. “This campaign is not just a remembrance,” Ravi said. “It’s to ensure that such a dictatorship is never repeated in India.” He noted that june 25 marks 50 years as then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency in 1975, a period that saw civil liberties curtailed and constitutional rights suspended. The BJP’s campaign will feature an exhibition detailing the Emergency period, which they term a “black chapter” in Indian democracy.
The BJP plans to honor those detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency. Their experiences will be documented and shared with young people. The campaign will also include a symbolic jail revisit and awareness marches. Several prominent leaders,including BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra and Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Shobha Karandlaje, will participate in outreach efforts across various districts.
