The Karnataka Congress government is facing renewed internal strife following the removal of Shivanand Patil, known as Rajanna, from his position as Minister for Kannada Culture and Tourism. The move comes amidst escalating tensions within the party, fueled by allegations of irregularities and power struggles.
Rajanna’s Removal and BJP Criticism
Rajanna’s dismissal was prompted by his recent statements regarding alleged corruption within the state bureaucracy. He had publicly stated that any irregularities were attributable too state officials, a claim that reportedly angered senior figures within the Congress.
BJP leaders have seized on the development, framing it as evidence of a lack of democracy within the ruling party. Former Minister and BJP leader Ashoka compared the situation to a cricket match, stating, “Wickets favouring Siddaramaiah were falling one by one.” He further alleged that Rajanna was “sacked for speaking the truth,” claiming the Congress leadership silenced him for exposing uncomfortable realities.
As BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar demanded a statement from the government, state Law and Parliamentary Minister H K Patil indicated that Chief minister Siddaramaiah would address the issue in the house. However,Patil also suggested the discussion was “unneeded” given the ongoing session.
A History of Controversy
This isn’t the first time Rajanna has created turbulence for the Congress. During the Budget session in March, the 74-year-old made startling allegations of a “honey trap” operation targeting him and 48 other leaders across party lines. A subsequent investigation by the state CID found no evidence to substantiate his claims. At the time, observers attributed the allegations to internal power dynamics within the state Congress.
Prior to his removal, Rajanna had publicly called for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, a prominent rival of Siddaramaiah, to be replaced as state Congress president. He also advocated for the appointment of three additional Deputy Chief Ministers, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to diminish Shivakumar’s influence within the state administration.
Reactions from Within the Congress
Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar expressed his surprise and disappointment at Rajanna’s removal. ”I am also hurt by this. He is a good friend. We have been in politics together for the last 25 years,” he stated.Shivakumar indicated he was unaware of the reasons behind the decision, stating that the party leadership had simply asked Rajanna to step down.
Further complicating matters, Rajanna recently objected to AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala chairing a meeting with state government officials, deeming it “anti-Constitutional.” This incident highlighted a growing rift between Rajanna and the central Congress leadership.
Implications for Karnataka Politics
Rajanna’s removal underscores the deep-seated divisions within the Karnataka Congress. the ongoing power struggle between Siddaramaiah and shivakumar continues to cast a shadow over the state government, and rajanna’s outspokenness appears to have exacerbated these tensions. The incident raises questions about the stability of the coalition and the party’s ability to govern effectively. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the congress can overcome these internal challenges and maintain its hold on power in Karnataka.
