Karoline Leavitt Named White House Press Secretary
President-elect Donald Trump announced Karoline Leavitt as his White House press secretary. At 27 years old, she will be the youngest press secretary in history, surpassing Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he served under Richard Nixon.
Trump praised Leavitt for her outstanding work as the National Press Secretary during his campaign. He stated, “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator.” He expressed confidence that she would excel in her new role.
The White House press secretary represents the administration and usually conducts daily press briefings. However, during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021, he often acted as his own spokesperson, holding four press secretaries while engaging directly with the public through rallies, social media, and statements.
In a recent news conference, Trump promised more access and press briefings in his upcoming administration. He mentioned that Leavitt would likely hold many briefings, stating, “You’ll have more than you want.”
Leavitt is a New Hampshire native known for her strong defense of Trump in media interviews. Before her new role, she worked for MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump. In 2022, she ran for Congress but lost to incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas after winning a Republican primary.
Leavitt previously worked in the White House press office and served as communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik, whom Trump selected for his U.N. ambassador position.
Trump’s former press secretaries, Sean Spicer and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, often clashed with reporters. In contrast, Stephanie Grisham did not hold any briefings, and Kayleigh McEnany frequently challenged the media during her briefings. With Leavitt stepping into the role, there is anticipation regarding her approach to the press.
