Kate Bush is set to release “Little Shrew,” a self-directed animated short film. The film, which already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, will be screened nationwide starting June 24. It will precede the World War II feature, “From Hilde, With Love,” in Picturehouse cinemas and other select locations.
“Little Shrew” uses the story of a pygmy shrew in a war-torn city as a metaphor to explore the experiences of children in war. The film features Bush’s song “Snowflake” from her 2011 album,”50 Words For Snow.”
bush said she decided to create the animation in 2022 following the outbreak of war in ukraine. Her goal with the animated short film was to highlight the plight of children affected by conflict. She based the storyboard on “Snowflake,” a song initially written to capture her son’s voice before adolescence, but which has gained new meaning in the context of the Little shrew release.
Initially, Bush considered centering the story around a little girl, but ultimately chose a pygmy shrew. She explained that she believed audiences might feel more empathy for a vulnerable animal than a human in this context. The Kate Bush project depicts the shrew’s journey through a war-torn city,searching for hope.
In addition to her film project, Bush has expressed a desire to create new music. While not actively working on music at the time of the ”Little Shrew” announcement last year, she said she was eager to return to that creative space. She also joined Elton john, Coldplay, Dua Lipa, and 400 other artists in calling on the UK goverment to address copyright laws concerning the threat of AI to musicians.
