Warner Bros. Has officially revealed the cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, marking a significant expansion of the Middle-earth cinematic universe. The upcoming film will see the return of several original cast members alongside high-profile new additions, including Oscar winner Kate Winslet and actor Jamie Dornan.
The production is set to debut in theaters on December 17, 2027. It stands as the seventh live-action movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise and the eighth feature-length installment following the 2024 animated prequel The War of the Rohirrim.
Casting and Character Details
Kate Winslet has been cast as the female lead in the project. While her involvement was first reported by Deadline on March 11, 2026, her character name, Marigol, was later revealed during a CinemaCon showcase.
In a major recasting move, Jamie Dornan will portray the character known as Strider, the younger version of Aragorn, taking over the role previously held by Viggo Mortensen. The film also brings back several actors in roles they originated in the original trilogy, including Andy Serkis as Gollum and Sméagol, Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
Additional cast members include Lee Pace, who returns as the Elf king Thranduil after originating the role in The Hobbit movies, and Leo Woodall, who will play a character named Halvard.
Production and Narrative Scope
The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who has portrayed Gollum since his debut in 2002’s The Two Towers. The screenplay was developed by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, working alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the longtime producing partners of Peter Jackson.
Narratively, The Hunt for Gollum is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. The plot focuses on Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum to prevent the creature from revealing the location of the One Ring to Sauron. Much of this story was developed from footnotes in J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings.
Filming and Logistics
Production for the epic is taking place in New Zealand, with Peter Jackson serving as a producer. Kate Winslet’s involvement required her to relocate to New Zealand to film her scenes from late May through October 2026.
Winslet is familiar with filming in the region, having previously worked with Peter Jackson on the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. Her casting follows her recent work in Avatar: Fire and Ash and her directorial debut, Goodbye June.
