Kathy Bates Eyes Emmy Win with ‘Matlock’ Role
Updated June 01, 2025
Kathy Bates, a veteran actress with over 50 years of experience, is once again generating awards buzz, this time for her leading role in CBS’s new series, Matlock. The Tennessee native, who honed her craft in New York theater, achieved Hollywood stardom with her unforgettable, Oscar-winning performance as Annie Wilkes in the 1990 film adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery.
Bates’s television work has also garnered important recognition from the Television Academy. After several nominations for shows like 3rd Rock From the Sun and Six Feet Under, she secured her first Emmy in 2012 for her guest role as Charlie Sheen’s character’s ghost on Two and a Half Men. That same year, she also received a nomination for lead actress in a drama for Harry’s Law.
Two years later, Bates earned her second Emmy as outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie for her role in American Horror Story: Coven. In Ryan Murphy’s third installment of the horror anthology, Bates portrayed Madame Delphine lalaurie, a character based on a real-life serial killer known for torturing enslaved people in 1830s New Orleans. Murphy described Bates’s character as “a bad, bad woman…five times worse than her Misery character.”
Bates continued her collaboration with Murphy in subsequent seasons of AHS. “Ryan Murphy has resurrected my career,” Bates told Vanity Fair in 2016, acknowledging the significant impact of their partnership. This collaboration marked a pivotal “third act” in her career, exceeding her initial expectations.
Now, at 76, Bates’s “third act” continues with Matlock, presenting her with another opportunity to win a lead actress Emmy. Bates said in October that she had been contemplating semi-retirement before Matlock came along. “So this came as a total surprise to me…I really can’t believe all this, especially at my age,” she added.
What’s next
As the Emmy season approaches, industry observers are keen to see if Kathy Bates’s performance in Matlock will earn her another prestigious award, further solidifying her legacy as a versatile and enduring talent in Hollywood.
