Updated June 11, 2025
Katie Couric has opened up about her complex relationship wiht former co-anchor Matt Lauer in the wake of his firing. Couric initially reached out too Lauer with a supportive text message, expressing her shock and care for him and his family.
However,as more allegations surfaced,Couric admitted she became concerned about her own reputation. She considered visiting Lauer but worried about the optics. Couric recalled thinking that a visit “might look like I condoned the behavior.”
Couric also addressed Addie Collins Zinone’s allegations of an affair with Lauer. Couric texted Lauer to let him know she was thinking of him. She later met with Zinone, who said the affair was consensual but that she felt she couldn’t say no.
In January 2018,Couric described the accusations against Lauer as “disturbing, distressing and disorienting” to People. She stated that she had no knowledge of the alleged behavior during or after her time at the show, emphasizing that it was “not the Matt we knew.”
Couric now says she and lauer no longer speak, and she doubts they ever will again. “I know Matt thinks I betrayed him, and that makes me sad,” Couric writes. ”But he betrayed me, too, by how he behaved behind closed doors at the show we both cared about so much.” The scandal and its aftermath have clearly had a lasting impact on Couric, forcing her to confront difficult questions about loyalty, reputation, and the complexities of workplace dynamics.
What’s next
