Katie Ledecky, the celebrated American swimmer, achieved a new milestone by setting a world record in the 800m freestyle. The event took place at the Tyr Pro Series meet in Florida, where the 28-year-old swimmer clocked an impressive 8 minutes and 4.12 seconds.
This achievement marks Ledecky’s first world record in seven years, surpassing her previous record of 8:04.79 set during her gold-medal performance at the Rio 2016 Games.Ledecky has now broken the 800m freestyle world record six times as 2013, when she first took it from Great Britain’s rebecca Adlington.
Prior to this, Ledecky’s most recent world record was in the 1500m freestyle in May 2018. She now holds four world records across both long and short courses in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events. Her recent performance indicates strong form, following her second-fastest 400m freestyle time and the second-fastest 1500m freestyle time in history earlier in the week.
Adding to the excitement, fellow American swimmer Gretchen Walsh also broke her own 100m butterfly world record at the same meet, clocking 55.09 seconds. Walsh currently holds nine world records,including five individual and four relay records.
