Florida Gators gymnast Kayla DiCello has returned to collegiate competition following a prolonged recovery process involving multiple surgeries and a significant injury that sidelined her from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
DiCello made her return to the University of Florida lineup for the first time since 2023 on January 10, 2026, appearing in the season opener.
Injury and Surgical Recovery
The gymnast’s path back to the floor began with a severe injury sustained on the first day of the U.S. Olympic Trials in Minneapolis in June 2024, where she suffered a torn right Achilles tendon.
The injury prevented DiCello from making the Olympic Team and left her unable to walk for a period of time.
During her period of forced inaction, DiCello underwent a second surgical procedure a few months after the initial tear to repair years of wear and tear on her left Achilles.
The recovery process was described by DiCello as a journey of small milestones. She focused on regaining basic mobility, such as taking small steps on padded surfaces, regaining the strength to stand on her toes and straightening her feet without discomfort.
Kayla DiCello
I was very happy whenever I would get those little accomplishments. It’s baby steps, especially when coming back from this injury.
Road to the 2026 Season
DiCello’s absence from the Gators lineup spanned several years. In late April 2023, following her freshman season at the University of Florida, she announced a year away from college gymnastics to focus on training for the Paris Olympics.

During that hiatus, she returned to her home state of Maryland to train at Hill’s Gymnastics, the facility where she first started the sport as a two-year-old.
Before the Achilles injury in June 2024, DiCello had shown strong form, securing the All-Around bronze medal at the 2024 U.S. Championships. She finished behind Simone Biles and her current Florida teammate, Skye Blakely.
Following her surgeries and rehabilitation, DiCello’s return to the UF roster on January 10, 2026, marked her first collegiate competition since 2023.
Competitive Outlook
DiCello returns to the program with the potential to be among the all-time best in the Florida Gators’ history.
Her return follows a rigorous rehab period from the right Achilles tear and the subsequent left foot surgery, a process she has shared publicly to document her emotional and physical recovery journey.
