Kazakh President Begins State Visit to Pakistan, Signaling Strengthened Ties

Islamabad, Pakistan – February 3, 2026 – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan arrived in Pakistan today for a two-day state visit, marking a significant moment in the evolving relationship between the two countries. The visit, occurring from February 3 to February 4, 2026, comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The Kazakh President was welcomed at the airport in Islamabad by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif, with a formal ceremonial welcome including a guard of honor and a 21-gun salute. Children waving the flags of both Kazakhstan and Pakistan were also present.

According to a Foreign Office statement, the visit will provide a “timely and important opportunity to undertake a comprehensive review of bilateral relations” and to discuss new avenues for broadening cooperation. Key areas of focus include trade, logistics, regional connectivity, and people-to-people contacts. Both nations also intend to explore collaboration at regional and international forums.

President Tokayev is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprised of senior cabinet ministers and other high-ranking officials. During his visit, he is scheduled to meet with President Zardari and hold talks with Prime Minister Sharif. He is also expected to address the Pakistan-Kazakhstan Business Forum.

Officials in Islamabad have described the trip as “timely and strategic,” anticipating that it will open new avenues of cooperation across multiple sectors. The visit reflects growing political engagement between Pakistan and Kazakhstan, which established diplomatic relations in the early 1990s, with high-level exchanges gaining momentum in recent years.

Trade and investment are expected to be prominent topics of discussion. While political relations are described as cordial, bilateral trade between the two countries is currently below its potential. The visit aims to deepen economic cooperation and energy ties, as well as enhance regional connectivity.

Pakistan and Kazakhstan have consistently backed each other’s positions at international platforms such as the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The strengthening of defense ties and expanded military cooperation are also on the agenda, with both countries vowing to deepen these areas of collaboration.

both nations are looking to strengthen ties in the field of education. The visit is seen as a step towards transforming historic and cultural affinities into robust cooperation, and a shared desire for peace and progress in the region.

PAF jets gave a spectacular aerial salute to the Kazakh President upon his arrival, according to Radio Pakistan.
