K-Electric Consumers to See Negative Fuel Cost Adjustment in June
Updated June 05, 2025
Karachi residents who get their power from K-Electric (KE) will see some relief in their June bills. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a negative fuel cost adjustment (FCA) of Rs2.98 per unit. This adjustment applies to electricity consumed in March.
According to Nepra, this negative FCA, amounting to negative Rs4.045 billion, will be passed on to consumers in their June billing cycle. Though, lifeline consumers, domestic protected consumers, electric vehicle charging stations, and prepaid electricity consumers are excluded.
The adjustment will appear as a separate item on the bill, reflecting the units billed for March. Nepra stated that if any June bills are issued before this notification, the adjustment should be applied in the subsequent month.
This negative FCA of Rs2.98/kWh is provisional and subject to change after Nepra determines KE’s Multi-Year Tariff for fiscal years 2024-30. Any cost differences will be addressed in future adjustments.
In contrast, other power distribution companies (discos) will see an increase. Nepra has notified an additional FCA of 0.93 per unit for ex-Wapda distribution companies, following an adjustment for variations in fuel charges for April.
This increase applies to all consumer categories except lifeline consumers, protected consumers, EVCS, and prepaid electricity consumers. Discos are instructed to reflect this adjustment in June bills, based on April’s unit consumption.
Similar to KE, if any June bills are issued before this notification, the adjustment should be applied in the subsequent month.
What’s next
Consumers should carefully review their June electricity bills to understand the impact of these fuel cost adjustments. The final FCA for K-Electric remains subject to Nepra’s decision on the Multi-Year Tariff for fiscal years 2024-30, which could lead to further adjustments in the future.
