Ke Wenzhe Resigns as People’s Party Chairman, Zhang Qikai Says Party Will Continue to Support Him
Taiwan’s People’s Party in Limbo as Chairman Ke Wenzhe Faces Detention
Taipei, Taiwan – The future of Taiwan’s People’s Party hangs in the balance as its chairman, Ke Wenzhe, remains in detention following his arrest in connection with the Jinghua City and other cases. While Ke Wenzhe submitted his resignation to the party’s secretary-general,the party itself disputes the validity of the resignation, setting the stage for a potential internal power struggle.
Ke Wenzhe, a prominent figure in Taiwanese politics, was granted a detention order by the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office on December 19th. He was questioned for eight hours before being remanded in custody. The following day, he was questioned again.
Adding to the complexity, Ke Wenzhe recently submitted a draft resignation statement to the party’s secretary-general, Zhou Youxiu. The Taipei District Court, however, ruled that the resignation would not affect the ongoing prosecutor’s investigation.
The People’s Party, however, maintains that the court’s decision does not automatically make the resignation effective. In a statement, the party asserted that the handling of the party charter should be determined through internal meetings, not judicial pronouncements.
“we have not yet received the court documents,” the party stated. “The operation of the People’s Party’s relevant charter should be handled by an internal meeting of the People’s Party, rather than a judge’s decision to announce the resignation as effective through the original text.”
Legislator Zhang Qicai, a member of the People’s Party’s Central Emergency Response Team, expressed concern over the situation.
“Many members of the Central Emergency response Team and party legislators believe that Ke Wenzhe is being politically persecuted,” Zhang Qicai stated. “They do not agree with the resignation of the party chairman under these circumstances and will continue to support him.”
Zhang Qicai emphasized that any decision regarding Ke Wenzhe’s leadership should be made through internal party processes, not external pressures.
“If Ke Wenzhe really wanted to step down as party chairman, it would be through deliberations by the China Review Council and the Central Commitee, not through the interpretation of the party constitution through the courts or the Beijing Procuratorate,” he said.
The People’s Party’s Central Emergency response Team is scheduled to meet to discuss the situation further. The outcome of this meeting could have important implications for the future direction of the party.
This developing story highlights the ongoing political tensions in Taiwan and the challenges facing opposition parties.
