In the 1996 film “Chain Reaction,” keanu Reeves played Eddie Kasalivich, a machinist involved in a University of Chicago experiment to generate energy from hydrogen. Eddie discovers a frequency that stabilizes the process, seemingly solving the world’s energy crisis.
However,the experiment is sabotaged,and Eddie is framed for the destruction,which decimates eight city blocks. He and physicist Lily, played by Rachel Weisz, must then evade conspirators, including one played by Morgan Freeman, to clear their names and uncover the truth.
“chain reaction” was not a success, earning just over $60 million against a $50 million budget. Reeves has indicated he was not pleased with the final product.
Script changes
Reeves told UPI in 2001 that the script was considerably altered just before filming began. The original version featured eddie as a married man with a child, driven by regret after his research led to a death. This was changed to a younger machinist, a move Reeves said he protested at the time.
Critics panned “Chain Reaction,” with an 18% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was widely described as generic and formulaic.
