A vibrant musical reading highlighted the multifaceted nature of womanhood and human experience.
For over a century, International Women’s Day has been celebrated globally. The Theaterwelt Goldscheuer team marked the occasion with a musical reading dedicated to honoring women. The welcoming cocktail, affectionately named “Amour Flamboyant,” symbolized the radiant recognition for the accomplishments and contributions of women worldwide. Wolfgang Weber provided piano accompaniment, complemented by vocal performances from Serge Blaszkiewiez.
Horst Kiss set the tone for the evening with his opening remarks: “Frauen sind die Säulen der Gesellschaft. Ohne sie würde die Welt zusammenbrechen. Frauen sind diejenigen, die die Welt mit ihrer Schönheit und ihrem mut inspirieren und mit ihrer Intelligenz und ihrem Wissen bereichern.” (“Women are the pillars of society. Without them, the world would collapse. Women are the ones who inspire the world with their beauty and courage and enrich it with their intelligence and knowledge.”)
recent Achievements in Women’s Rights
Women are agents of change, driving progress across various spheres. They have fought for and achieved notable milestones: wearing short hair, opening their own bank accounts, retaining their maiden names, and demanding equal treatment in the workplace, among many others. Though, the journey toward full equality is ongoing. Maike Blaszkiewiez and christina Hardy reflected on a century of strong women, from the revolution of the pantsuit, popularized by Marlene Dietrich, to the miniskirt era and the iconic feminist figure, Alice Schwarzer.
The evening also paid tribute to Hildegard Knef, one of germany’s most remarkable actresses. Knef, a singer and author, navigated a life of both triumphs and tragedies. In 1945, she bravely stepped onto the stage of cabaret and theater, quickly becoming a star in the German post-war art scene.
The Courage of Rosa Parks
The event also commemorated lesser-known figures, such as Rosa Parks, who, on December 1, 1955, refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, for a white passenger. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 381-day demonstration of solidarity and courage. She became a beacon of hope.
The realities of womanhood were also addressed. Christina and Maike humorously lamented the effects of gravity on the female form over time. In response to Christina’s playful question, “Was soll ich denn nur heute tragen?” (“What should I wear today?”), Serge Blaszkiewiez offered a charming musical reply: “Toutes les femmes sont belles” (“All women are beautiful”).
Endearing Quirks
Kiss humorously spoke of the challenges of waiting patiently outside stores while women “quickly” shopped. This led to the question: “Was ist eine Frau? Die Mutter allen Lebens? Oder des Mannes Ehrenpreis nach Kampf und Streit?” (“What is a woman? The mother of all life? Or man’s prize of honor after struggle and strife?”) Wolfgang Weber spontaneously responded with: “Frauen sind die Juwelen der Schöpfung, man muss sie mit Fassung tragen” (“Women are the jewels of creation; one must wear them with composure”).
The event, themed ”Frauen,Ihr seid wunderbar” (“Women, you are wonderful”),resonated deeply with the predominantly female audience. Serge Blaszkiewiez’s musical encores, “La mer” and “La chansonnette,” further delighted the attendees.
