The suspect is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.
The Metropolitan police’s counter-terrorism unit is leading the investigation into the series of fires in north London. The incidents include a blaze at the home of starmer’s sister-in-law, which he rents out, and a car he previously sold to a neighbor.
Three other men—Petro Pochynok, 34, Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Stanislav Carpiuc, 26—have already been charged in connection with the arson attacks. Pochynok and Carpiuc are accused of conspiring to commit arson with intent to endanger life. Lavrynovych faces three counts of arson with intent to endanger life. All three are scheduled to appear in court Friday at the Old Bailey.
On May 12, firefighters responded to a fire at the entrance of the north-west London property rented by Starmer’s sister-in-law. Authorities reported damage to the entrance, but no injuries. Four days earlier, a car Starmer sold to a neighbor was set ablaze on the same street.
Another fire occurred May 11 at the front door of a house in north London where Starmer reportedly lived in the 1990s before it was converted into flats. Firefighters rescued one person from the building.
Carpiuc’s barrister, Jay Nutkins, said his client has lived in the U.K. for nine years, recently completed a business studies degree at Canterbury Christ Church University, and works in construction.
