A passenger on an Amtrak bus traveling from Bakersfield to Tijuana intervened after a woman allegedly stabbed a 60-year-old passenger near Union Station on Thursday, nbclosangeles.com reported. Keith Metcalf, who was on board the bus, used his sweater as a tourniquet to wrap around the victim’s arm while other passengers worked to constrain the attacker.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the reported stabbing just before 3:15 p.m. Police stated that the female suspect attacked the 60-year-old man with a knife during the trip. The victim was transported to a hospital following the incident, though his exact condition remains unknown.
Witness Intervention Averts Further Attacks Near Union Station
Metcalf recalled hearing loud noises and commotion as the bus approached Union Station. I look back, and I hear this guy saying, ‘Oh my God, she just stabbed somebody. She just stabbed somebody,’
Metcalf said. According to Metcalf, the suspect brandished a medium-sized knife with curves on both sides and threatened other individuals on the bus.
Metcalf rushed to aid the injured passenger. I was trying to help the man as best I could,
Metcalf said. And luckily, he was a pretty tough little guy. It affected me in a way that I just wasn’t expecting, you know, because I really thought that guy was going to die.
Suspect Detained by Police Following Passenger Action
Other passengers onboard stepped in to prevent further injuries during the chaotic scene. Metcalf noted that another passenger shouted for people to move toward the front of the vehicle, away from the armed woman. Several travelers managed to constrain the suspect until the vehicle came to a complete stop.
Upon arrival at the destination near Union Station, Los Angeles Police Department officers took the woman into custody. Amtrak officials did not respond to multiple requests for comment regarding the incident.
