Kelang, a Malaysian restaurant located at 715 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, represents a modern approach to culinary authenticity by blending traditional Malaysian flavors with the cultural influences of the owner’s upbringing in New York City.

Opened in early December 2025, the establishment is the follow-up project from the family behind Hainan Chicken House in Sunset Park. Under the creative leadership of owner Christopher Low, Kelang serves as a more expansive expression of the family’s culinary vision than its predecessor.

Cultural Synthesis and Identity

The menu at Kelang is designed to reflect the hybrid identity of Christopher Low, an American-born son of Malaysian parents who grew up in Brooklyn during the 1980s and 1990s. The offerings are informed by his family’s roots in the Malaysian port city of Klang, as well as the Caribbean and Italian American flavors he encountered from neighbors and friends in his youth.

This approach focuses on a personal synthesis rather than traditional fusion. The restaurant aims to reflect the actual lives of second-generation immigrants whose palates are shaped by both their parents’ homelands and the urban environments where they were raised.

Low has noted that his family’s hometown of Klang possesses a distinct food culture compared to other regions of Malaysia. This is evidenced in the restaurant’s use of dark soy sauce in dishes such as bak kut teh, a pork stew, and a version of char kway teow that differs from the style found in Penang.

Menu Highlights and Dining Experience

The menu combines classic Malaysian staples with idiosyncratic additions. Key dishes include:

Menu Highlights and Dining Experience
  • A puffy paratha served on spiced red-lentil dal and topped with Italian stracciatella cheese.
  • Oxtail rendang.
  • Char siu.
  • Hainanese chicken rice.

The dining environment is described as a sultry space with cinematic flair, designed to look more like an upscale cocktail bar than a casual eatery. The establishment features approximately 70 seats available via reservations on Resy, with an additional eight to 10 seats reserved for walk-ins at the bar.

The beverage program includes a short cocktail menu featuring Southeast Asian interpretations of classics and a curated wine list that includes bottles from Slovenia and Greece, specifically highlighting Slovenian orange wine.

Origins and Evolution

The development of Kelang followed the success of Hainan Chicken House, which opened in 2023. While the Sunset Park location became known for its hawker-style chicken rice and rotating specials, Low viewed Kelang as an opportunity to create a fully fleshed-out concept.

Low stated that Kelang represents everything that I wanted to be able to do at Chicken House, allowing for more creative license in the menu and a more intentional design in the physical space.

The restaurant caters to a variety of dietary needs, offering vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options to accommodate groups with diverse requirements.
