Coast-to-coast Tribute: House Passes Bill to Designate U.S. Route 20 as National Medal of Honor Highway
WASHINGTON,D.C. – in a bipartisan show of support for America’s bravest heroes, the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday passed legislation to designate U.S. Route 20 as the National Medal of Honor Highway. The bill, championed by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), now heads to president Biden’s desk for his signature.
This historic designation honors the 3,519 recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for valor. U.S. Route 20, stretching over 3,000 miles from Massachusetts to Oregon, will serve as a poignant reminder of the remarkable sacrifice and courage these individuals displayed.
“By designating U.S. Route 20 as the ‘National Medal of Honor Highway,’ we commemorate all Medal of Honor recipients, both living and passed,” said Rep. Kelly. “It’s my sincere hope that the millions who travel this highway each year will take a moment to reflect on the legacy of these heroes.”
The legislation has garnered widespread support, with legislatures and governors in all 12 states along U.S. Route 20 already designating their state portions as Medal of Honor Highways.
The medal of honor is awarded to U.S. service members who distinguish themselves “through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.”
