Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is weighing a policy pledge to abolish inheritance tax if her party wins the next general election, setting up a sharp fiscal clash with rival party Reform UK over the United Kingdom’s tax system. According to reporting from The Sun, the potential inheritance tax repeal could form the centerpiece of Badenoch’s party conference speech scheduled for next month.

The proposed policy marks one of the most significant tax-cutting initiatives considered by the Conservative leader following her prior commitment last year to abolish stamp duty on residential property. Inheritance tax is currently levied at a rate of 40 percent on the portion of an estate exceeding the £325,000 tax-free threshold. While additional allowances allow married couples or civil partners to pass a family home to descendants with higher exemptions, fewer than five percent of estates actually pay the levy under current rules.

Political Clash Over Inheritance Tax Proposals

The prospect of scrapping the tax has already drawn heavy political pushback from Reform UK. Reform shadow chancellor Robert Jenrick dismissed the Conservative proposal as a desperate political play, pointing out that previous Conservative administrations failed to deliver on similar promises while collecting substantial revenue from estates. Past Conservative pledges to reduce inheritance tax failed to stop them from extracting £84bn in death levies from grieving families. We’ve heard this desperate play, and people won’t be fooled again.

The party proposes raising the tax-free personal allowance to £15,000. According to Reform UK, that change would save 40 million people £500 annually and stop numerous pensioners from paying income tax on their state pensions. Jenrick also pledged to resign if he fails to introduce the measure in his first Budget as chancellor, stating he is willing to put his job on the line compared to career politicians.

Broader Economic Strategy and Policy Timeline

Conservative insiders indicate that the leadership views the Labour government as vulnerable on economic matters and intends to campaign aggressively on tax reductions ahead of the next national vote. However, the Conservative Party has not yet formally approved the inheritance tax repeal for its official platform. We have not decided our policy platform for the conference. During a speech last week, Kemi made her ambitions to lower taxes abundantly clear, specifically pointing to inheritance tax as one of the levies she aims to reduce.
