In a discussion published by The Guardian on April 13, 2026, Loach noted that while the film originally questioned whether the existence of food banks was tolerable, they have since become an institution.

The film, which won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 2016, centers on the cruelty of the system and the vilification of vulnerable individuals seeking support. Loach explained that the narrative was designed to challenge the systemic belief that poverty is the fault of the poor or a result of a lack of striving.

Through this charity, the filmmakers met a variety of people who were unable to find work due to a lack of available jobs or those working for agencies on insecure wages without stable housing. One specific encounter involved a young man living in a shared house provided by Doorway.

We visited one lad in a flat: there was nothing in the room apart from a fridge and a mattress. We chatted for a bit, then Paul said: “Do you mind sharing what’s in your fridge?” There was nothing in there. Paul asked: “When did you eat last?” He said: “Two or three days ago.” It took our breath away.

Loach described the conditions of this room as Dickensian, noting the stark reality of a fridge that contained no milk or biscuits, reflecting the absolute poverty that informed the script’s authenticity.
