Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched investigations into 29 school districts to ensure compliance with state laws requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms and school board votes on prayer time.
The investigations follow an April 21 decision by a federal appeals court to uphold a Texas law that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.
The legal requirements stem from two pieces of legislation passed by the Texas Legislature during the 89th session in 2025. Senate Bill 10 requires public schools to display donated copies of the Ten Commandments that adhere to specific specifications.
Senate Bill 11 requires school boards to hold a vote to determine whether to implement a designated time for prayer and the reading of the Bible or other religious texts.
The Office of the Attorney General has demanded that the targeted school districts provide evidence of a board vote regarding the implementation of Senate Bill 11.
The Attorney General’s office is also requiring the districts to produce documentation concerning their policies regarding Senate Bill 10 and evidence of whether the Ten Commandments are currently displayed.
Texas school districts must comply with Texas law by displaying the Ten Commandments and taking a school board vote regarding the implementation of prayer time in schools. I will never stop defending our students’ religious freedom and the moral foundation of our nation. Ken Paxton
The April 21 court ruling has set the stage for a potential challenge in the Supreme Court.
